Formation of dry granular fronts and watery tails in debris flows

چکیده

Debris flows are particle–fluid mixtures that pose a significant hazard to many communities throughout the world. Bouldery debris often characterised by deep dry granular flow front, which is followed progressively thinner and increasingly watery tail. The formation of highly destructive bouldery wave fronts usually attributed particle-size segregation. However, moving-bed flume experiments Davies ( N. Z. J. Hydrol. , vol. 29, 1990, pp. 18–46) show discrete surges with tails also form in monodisperse mixtures. These observations motivate development new depth-averaged mixture theory for flows, explicitly takes account differing phreatic surfaces, velocity shear, relative motion between grains fluid explain these phenomena. consists four coupled conservation laws describe spatial temporal evolution grain water thicknesses velocities. This system enables travelling solutions be constructed consist (i) large amplitude front smoothly transitions (ii) an undersaturated body, (iii) oversaturated region then (iv) pure It shown good quantitative agreement Davies’ at high bed speeds slope inclinations. At lower inclinations, produces connect steady-uniform upstream flow, may or not have bulbous consistent observations.

Are There Long-Time Tails in Granular Flows?

The long-time tails in the current autocorrelation functions are one of the important characteristics in nonequilibrium physics.1), 2), 3), 4) It is known that the long tails are originated from the correlated collisions which cause anomalous transport behaviors such as the system size dependence of the transport coefficients.5), 6) The analysis of such behaviors is still an active subject in n...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...

Experimental design of a diversion structure of granular debris flows

Many alpine torrents convey regularly debris flows of high destructive hazard. After several granular events observed in Bruchji’s torrent near the Blatten village in the Swiss Alps, it was decided to manage the risk of similar debris flows by designing and constructing a control structure inside the torrent bed. Associated with a breach in the right bank side of the torrent, this control struc...

Levee-channel Deposits in Dry or Wet Debris Flows: a Tool to Understand Gullies Formation

Introduction: Recent gullies on Mars are observed on the wallslopes of the mid-latitude regions. They might sign the presence of fluid flows, likely involving liquid water, in a recent past [1]. However, authors have shown that dry flows might be an alternative to the formation of Martian gullies [e.g.2]. Levees are frequently present together Martian gullies independently of their location (du...
